Warnakula Aditta Arsanilaitta Ambrosius De Rowel family of Waikkal

The Dutch Governor  Lubbert  Baron Van Eck, appointed Anthony  Rowel  as the Maha Vidane & Mohandiram of Alutkuru Korale by an instrument dated Colombo 1763, and in the same year for services rendered  in the Kandyan expedition he was made Mudliyar of the same district on the recommendation of  Jan Jugen Faber.   Miguel Rowel , third son of Anthony , succeeded his father as Mohandiram of the same district and  Warnakula Weerassoriya  Jayatiilake  Elias Warnakula  Aditya  Arsanillitta  Ambrosius de Rowel  was the son of Carolis , Notary Public.

He was born in Waikkal in 1834, and after being educated privately, he assisted his father in notarial duties and in the supervision of his coconut & tobacco plantations. In 1871 he succeeded his father as Notary Public, was appointed as Mohandiram of Pitigal Korale in 1876, Titular Mudliyar in 1887, and Mudliyar in 1895.  Two years later, he became justice of peace and Mudilyar of the governor’s gate.  He was a member of the agricultural society and of the district board committee and before his death, which took place in 1906, he was specially commended by the governor for his faithful services.

He married Maria, daughter of Robert Lowe of Marawila in 1872 and their elder daughter, Dorothy Julianna   married F. A Wijesekera  J.P and U.P.M and president of the village tribunal of Salpita Korale while Rosalind, the second daughter married Martin Daberara , Mudliyar of Pitigal Korale South of Waikkal.

Michelia Lowe ( another daughter of Robert Lowe), was married to our  great grand father’s brother, Warnakula  Aditta Arsanilaitta   Don Alvinu Perera,  who lived at  ‘Alvin Grove’,  Perera Road,  Marawila  (see photo below).

 

Warnakulasuriya   Martin Daberara Mudilyar of Pitigal Korale South,   was the son of W. Sylvester  Daberera,  landed proprietor of Waikkal and  Celestine - daughter of Carolis Rowel notary public.   He was born in 1880 and was educated at St Joseph’s college.

In 1900, he was appointed Fiscal Marshal of Pitigal Korale South.  He acted as Mudliyar on various occasions and succeeded his father in law,   Ambrosius  De Rowel in that position in 1906 and was the youngest  Mudliyar in the service.  In 1902  he married Roselind Prudentia De Rowel, youngest daughter of late Mudliyar  Ambrosius  De Rowel.  His official residence was “Wasala Walauwa” in  Waikkal.
